Figures

Most of my current figurative works are built by hand from clay, bisque fired and then finished by smoldering them in sawdust in a pit in the ground.  Pit firing produces surfaces that seem to come from within the figures, and the earthy colors and sheening co-express the empathy that I build into the forms.  For some other figures, I prefer surfaces produced by underglaze and glaze.  My goal is always for my figures to embody themes that are most significant to me: experiencing loss; fighting against inequality; finding strength in vulnerability; and growing toward liberation.  There is more information in my “Artist Statement” and “How I Work.”
