Figures

My current figurative works are handbuilt clay forms that have been bisque fired and then finished by smoldering them in sawdust in a pit in the ground.  Pit firing produces surfaces that seem to come from within the figures, and the earthy colors and sheening co-express the empathy that I build into the forms.  These qualities help my figures embody themes that are most important to me: fighting against inequality and injustice; finding strength in vulnerability; and growing toward liberation.  There is more information in my “Artist Statement” and “How I Work.”
